Using the Otoscope and Other Video Sources
When the remote computer accesses the Video Otoscope screen (or other live video screens) in the tConsult Cart software, several additional buttons may be displayed which are unique to the remote session. These buttons control the resolution of the live video image being transmitted from the Cart to the remote computer. These buttons only apply to video sources that utilize a Spectrim video capture card. The buttons include , , , and , as shown below:
These buttons were added to address image quality problems caused by limited bandwidth in the networks between the remote computer and the Cart. The lower the video resolution, the better the image quality at the remote site. The maximum resolution of 640 x 480 matches the resolution available on the Cart. The image above shows the video image from the video otoscope reduced to 240 x 180 pixels.
Using an instrument like the video otoscope is difficult over a remote session. This is because the individual assisting at the Cart’s location will not be able to see the image produced by the live video feed (the image at the Cart is a blank login screen). This makes it more difficult to position the instrument in the patient’s ear for a good image. The individual running the Cart from the remote location would have to guide the positioning of the instrument via telephone or other voice communications.
Note: If a video source (such as an otoscope) has an additional video output, it may be possible to connect a monitor to that second output. This would allow the user at the Cart’s location to observe the image making it easier to position the instrument.
Note: If a video device uses a generic video input instead of a Spectrim video capture card, then the buttons shown above will not appear.
