Alaska Federal Health Care Access Network Wins TETHIE Award for Most Innovative New Technology Device for Diagnosis

(Washington, DC December 3, 2004) –The Emerging Technologies and Healthcare Innovations Congress (TETHIE) presented the Alaska Federal Health Care Network (AFHCAN) with top honors in one of 11 special award categories during their 2004 Conference held recently in Washington D.C. November 30 through December 3, 2004.

AFHCAN received the Most Innovative New Technology Device for Diagnosis award for their mobile, telehealth diagnostic system. In making the award, TETHIE noted that this novel technology improves precision, accessibility, turnaround time, and access to diagnostic services for medical practitioners and their patients at remote locations throughout Alaska. In addition, the system is also helping to decrease the cost of providing care and enhancing the sharing of limited health care resources across all Federal beneficiaries in the state.

Known as the AFHCAN Cart, this mobile workstation integrates telemedicine software, hardware, wireless network capability, and power management hardware into an easy-to-use platform. The system provides a simple interface that quickly develops a complete telehealth case. A case created on a cart may be sent to a remote provider or group of providers for review and consultation. The remote provider can view the case on a standard PC, and can respond to the original provider or forward the case to other providers.

More than 700 health care providers are using the AFHCAN telemedicine solution statewide. In the past three years they have created over 19,000 clinical cases and 3,000 training cases comprising 76,000 digital images and 6,000 ECG tracings.

According to AFHCAN director A. Stewart Ferguson, this national honor is a significant accomplishment for the Alaskan Organization. “The Emerging Technologies and Healthcare Innovations Congress provides health care industry executives with an in-depth look at the impact and promise of new technology on the future of medical care in the United States and around the world. This recognition increases awareness among telemedicine professionals of the groundbreaking work AFCHAN is doing in bringing quality medical diagnostic care to rural communities.”
