Satellite-Based Telehealth Software
AFHCAN developed a web-based telehealth application designed to work over the AFHCAN Wide Area Network. Because satellite connectivity generally plays havoc with web-based software, all AFHCAN software development is tested over a simulated satellite network. AFHCAN software developers work at a very fine level, examining every packet sent between clients and server to look for ways to speed up performance.
As a result, software performance has been improved by a factor of 10 in the last 2 years while adding functionality and flexibility. AFHCAN continues to conduct extensive testing and research on various methods to improve performance over satellite connectivity.
Satellite connectivity is also susceptible to noise, sun spot activity, and a variety of other issues that interrupt connectivity. The web-based software is designed using a “state machine architecture,” which essentially stores all user input at the server until a case is sent. If a user is in the midst of creating a case and loses connectivity (or the computer crashes), that information is still available the next time the user logs in from another machine.
