   Connectivity

Connectivity to most sites is provided over dedicated satellite links. Working with the two major telecommunications firms in Alaska (GCI Inc. and AT&T Alascom), the AFHCAN staff developed a Wide Area Network connecting most of the AFHCAN sites through collocation facilities – one at each telco. These two collocation points are connected through redundant paths, providing an efficient and robust design that facilitates connectivity between all AFHCAN organizations.

The AFHCAN Wan is used not only for sending telehealth cases, but is used for teleradiology, telepharmacy, remote access to Hospital Information Systems, video conferencing, Voice-over-IP, and a host of other services required to deliver health care to remote locations.
